Not that long ago West Central was filled with homes in desperate need of renovation, lots of run down lots and very little to explore. However, in the last 10 years that has drastically changed! Sitting right across the river from Downtown, we have seen the biggest changes in this neighborhood. Most Spokanites think of the West Central as the area west of Maple St. However, we are going to wrap in the area east of Maple St to Division as part of this artclle as it has all been transformed in recent years.
Sitting on the hillside on the northside of the river is Kendall Yards, the catalyst for the revamping of the West Central neighborhood. Kendall Yards was started as a townhome development by Greenstone Homes around 2013. In the beginning the sales were slow, the area had previously been empty lots with a few run down homes mixed in between. Greenstone, however, had the vision to create it’s own little neighborhood amongst the townhomes, which included parks, shopping centers, grocery store and walking trails. As the townhomes began to sell they added condos and single family homes. The prices have increased drastically since the beginning and more stores, spas and restaurants have moved in. As this area’s growth accelerated the surrounding blocks began to see a shift as well. Lots of investors came in to renovate and sell homes, rentals were being updated and lots snatched up.
Recently the Monroe St corridor has also been updated with more parking, larger sidewalks, greenery and additional shops. The YMCA with workout center and pool is along Monroe, as is REI and a variety of local spots.
Additionally, the Flour Mill sits adjacent to the Spokane Arena and across from Riverfront Park with the Clinkerdagger restaurant overlooking the Spokane River. This building offers quaint boutiques including a chocolatier and Wonders of the World. The history is also fun to explore!
Parks are scattered throughout as are a variety of eateries and venues. It’s a quick jaunt across the river to reach Downtown and similar distance west to hiking trails, outlooks and even Riverside State Park!
